President Trump recently announced a new continental military coalition aimed at eradicating drug cartels, referring to Mexico as the “epicenter of cartel violence”. He has repeatedly threatened to deploy the U.S. military to Mexican soil to hit cartel targets directly. President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly and “proudly” rejected Trump’s offers to send the U.S. Army into Mexico. She maintains that all operations in Mexico must be conducted exclusively by Mexican security forces. 

A major source of recent tension is a successful operation by Mexican special forces that killed notorious cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera. While the operation used U.S. intelligence, it sparked a massive wave of retaliatory violence across Mexico, including road blocks and the burning of supermarkets and banks.
