Book Review: Do Not Disturb by Freida McFadden

Genre: Psychological Thriller / Suspense Themes: Isolation, Marital Secrets, Paranoia

Freida McFadden has carved out a niche as the queen of the “popcorn thriller”—books that are fast-paced, slightly outrageous, and impossible to put down. Do Not Disturb is no exception. It’s a claustrophobic, locked-room style mystery that pays homage to classic tropes while adding McFadden’s signature brand of chaotic energy.

The Premise: A Road Trip Gone Wrong

The story follows Quinn and Nick, a couple whose marriage is hanging by a thread. In a desperate attempt to outrun a “problem” back home (the details of which are teased out through breadcrumbs), they drive into a blinding snowstorm in the middle of nowhere.

When their car spins out, they find refuge at the Highland Inn, a dilapidated, remote motel run by a very strange man. It’s a setup straight out of Psycho, and the “No Vacancy” sign is just the first of many red flags.

What Works: The McFadden Formula

  • Pacing: Like most of her work, this book is designed to be read in a single sitting. The chapters are short, usually ending on mini-cliffhangers that keep you turning pages.
  • Atmosphere: McFadden excels at building a sense of dread. The isolation of the blizzard, the flickering lights, and the creepy behavior of the motel owner create an effective, skin-crawling environment.
  • The Unreliable Narrator: You spend a good portion of the book wondering who to trust. Quinn is clearly hiding something, Nick is behaving erratically, and the motel owner is… well, terrifying.

The “Twist” Factor

If you’ve read The Housemaid or The Warden, you know McFadden loves a sharp left turn. Do Not Disturb delivers a series of revelations in the final third. While some seasoned thriller readers might spot the “big reveal” early on, the way it unfolds remains entertaining.

Note: This book leans heavily into “suspension of disbelief.” If you require airtight logic and realistic police procedures, this might frustrate you. If you enjoy a “wild ride” where the shocks matter more than the realism, you’ll love it.

Final Verdict

Do Not Disturb is a fun, dark, and campy thriller. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it spins it fast enough to keep you dizzy. It’s the perfect “palate cleanser” book between heavier reads or a great companion for a rainy weekend.
