Made In Basingstoke - From Jane Austen To Celebrity Chefs
A trip to Basingstoke, the largest town in Hampshire, England.
Jane Austen was born here in 1775 and lived in the Basingstoke area the first 25 years of here life.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death an art trail ‘Sitting wth Jane’ has been created around the town. 24 book benches have been decorated by different artists, each with their own interpretation of Jane Austen’s work.
A new life size statute of Jane Austen outside the Willis museum has also been unveiled to celebrate the Basingstoke girl.
The #MadeInBasingstoke festival was also in full flow and we were lucky enough to meet the celebrity chef Phil Vickery from the TV show ‘This Morning’ after he did a cooking demonstration in the Malls shopping centre.
To finish our weekend we had a traditional English afternoon tea at the Red Lion, originally built in 1603 the inn was to became one of the leading public buildings in Basingstoke.
